Eroni, 19yrs old - Ba

For as long as he can remember, Eroni has had difficulty hearing the people around him. He suffered through earaches and discharge, and often had painful headaches that would keep him home from school. Often times his parents or teachers would be calling to him and Eroni, not being able to hear them, seemed to be in a world of his own.

During Project HEAVEN’s screening visit to Xavier Secondary School in Ba, Eroni was diagnosed with Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media, often caused by an infection in the middle ear. Eroni was referred by the Project HEAVEN team to the medical officer and was prescribed with antibiotics and rechecked by Dr Joji (ENT Specialist) in Suva. While there he also had a CT scan to understand what was causing the ear pain.

The team paid a follow up visit to his home where they showed Eroni and his parents the scans of his ear through the video otoscope. During their counselling with the family, the Project HEAVEN team explained where the ear infection was coming from, and the need to check ears often and keep them clean.
Eroni’s headaches are now gone, his ear is clean and pain free – best of all he can hear everyone and pay attention during his classes.

Ulamila, 73yrs old - Ba

Ulamila lives with her family in Ba and with age had found it hard to communicate with those around. Her daughter found it hard to understand her and noticed that her mother’s hearing was going. Ulamila had started to withdraw from everyone, and would just stay home during family functions even on Sundays because it would irritate her that she couldn’t hear any conversation.

Project HEAVEN conducts outreach screenings for our vulnerable community members. During one of these visits, they spoke with Ulamila and her daughter and recommended an assistive hearing device. The team assessed Ulamila and fitted her with a new hearing aid.

Now with the hearing aid.
Ulamila has experienced a great change in the quality of her life. Instead of just staying alone at home she can now join her family on outings and is confident again to go to town alone. Her daughter told the Project HEAVEN team “She is now coming to family functions, and is now always happy and lively”.

Sumaysha, 6yrs old - Labasa

Sumaysha was in year one when Project HEAVEN came to her school, Guru Nanak Primary School in Labasa. She had been having difficulty focusing in class. Through the routine eye screening and examination Sumaysha's mother was informed that she had refractive error and a referral letter was sent so she could be seen by an optometrist.

Project HEAVEN follows up on all the screened students and found that when they returned 2 weeks later Sumaysha had been to the optometrist and was now wearing prescription glasses.

Ms Tasmeen, Sumaysha's mother was grateful for the primary care provided through Project HEAVEN, saying she "wouldn't have known that Sumaysha had difficulty with her vision"

Leone, 6yrs old - Ba

Leone had an ear infection. His ears were sore and a smelly discharge would weep from them, causing him pain and embarrassment. His mother wasn’t sure what was wrong or how to help him. When Project HEAVEN came to conduct screening at his school he was diagnosed with Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media, often caused by an infection in the middle ear, and sent to the hospital with a referral for medication. There he received a course of antibiotics that cleared up the infection.

When the Project HEAVEN team came back to follow up on Leone, his mother said that his ears had started to heal and dry out, and the smelling discharge had gone. Leone could go to school again without feeling shy or embarrassed. With some home counselling, the family is now aware of how to care for their ears and eyes so that they stay healthy.

Ravneel, 8yrs old - Macuata

Ravneel's father, explained to the Project HEAVEN team when they conducted their screening that his son struggles to hear when the teachers or family call him.

During the screening the Project HEAVEN team found that Ravneel's ears were full of a hard wax. The team were able to loosen and remove the wax with their standard ear flushing. Almost immediately Ravneel could hear better and was responding to his family and teachers.

At school, Ravneel can now hear instructions and follow the stories in class. His father commented to the team "I am really appreciative of the Project HEAVEN team for visiting the school and checking the students ears and eyes".

"The hearing aid has really improved my life. It has helped me tremendously. Every time I go out to Ba town to shop, I wear it, and it is very helpful when I’m talking with fellow villagers and family members. I’m grateful to Project HEAVEN for giving me the opportunity to hear again, vinaka!"
