Our mission

We work to ensure that all school children and people in Fiji particularly those in rural and remote communities have access to and information on primary ear and eye health care.

Our Story

Project HEAVEN (Hearing and Vision Enhancement) was founded in 1995 by Frank Hilton, the renowned educator and advocate for people living with disability. We were established as a Charitable Trust Organization initially to provide early diagnosis of ear and eye impairment in school age children across Fiji, by providing on site screening services. On-site means that Project HEAVEN teams go out to schools around Fiji, conducting eye and ear screening services.

Since the beginning of our outreach primary screening services, over 25 years ago, Project HEAVEN has conducted over 1,000 school visits and screened over 200,000 school aged children. This dedicated work has led to the early detection and referral of over 1,400 cases of eye and ear conditions each year.

Early diagnosis of hearing loss or vision impairment is important because it leads to early intervention. Early intervention might include therapies, supports and listening or visual devices that help children learn to communicate and navigate the world around them. We do this because we believe that every child has the right to a great education, and to fulfil their wildest dreams. Undiagnosed impairments shouldn't prevent that, and early diagnosis leads to better learning outcomes.

Project HEAVEN has evolved over these 27 years and now also has a permanent office in Suva that provides these services to walk-in patients, providing ear and eye screening for medical certificates, referral for therapies and support devices.

The organisation currently employs over 20 people, who work in teams across the country. Our strategic direction and governance is overseen by our board of directors.
