Hearing and vision assessments

Our clinic at Tamavua House, in the Twomey Hospital provides free hearing and vision screening and diagnosis for people of all ages. Our trained clinicians provide testing that involves a comprehensive evaluation of an individual's hearing and visual abilities, for referral and treatment, for medical certificates and for insurances.

What to expect when you come to our clinic

First you'll be greeted by our friendly clinical screening officer Luisa.

She will then ask of your complaints (whether its an ear or eye problem) and a few basic details such as age, prior medical conditions and history of any accidents that may be impacting your vision or hearing.

Luisa and her team will then proceed to gently check your eyes and/or ears. Depending on the outcome, you may be referred to a doctor or specialist for further treatment.

Our check ups and screening are free to everyone.

However some services have a fee. These are listed below:

  • Ear flushing = $10

  • Audiometry test = $40 (adults); $35 (children)

Hearing test

  1. Visual examination: this is to check that everything on the outer ear is normal

  2. Otoscopy: this is when an otoscope is used to look inside of the ears to check that everything is normal and there is nothing obstructing the passage of sound/air waves, also checking if the eardrum is in its normal state (pearly white or grey in color and we can look through it).

  3. However, if something is out of the ordinary, that is when the screening officer will diagnose the patient and refer them for further assessments/treatment to medical officers, ENT clinic at CWMH and Frank Hilton Organization (for children)

Vision test

  1. Visual examination: basic eye examination to check if there are any abnormalities with the eye.

  2. Vision test – involves reading letters on an eye chart.

  3. Eye screening is quick way to find out if you need a complete exam, which checks both vision and eye health.

  4. Therefore, if the patient is diagnosed with any form of eye impairment, they are then referred to a Medical Officer, Optometrist or Ophthalmologist for further eye assessments and treatments.
